I am an aspiring social entrepreneur. What that means exactly continues to unfold for me in this wild and wonderful life.
There is no universal, agreed-upon definition of an “entrepreneur.” Merriam-Webster boringly defines it as “one who organizes, manages, and assumes the risks of a business or enterprise.”
I much prefer the more vibrant definition given in 1934 by Austrian economist, Joseph Schumpeter: “Entrepreneurs are innovators who use a process of shattering the status quo of the existing products and services, to set up new products, new services.”
Add to that “for the betterment of our world,” and this is the kind of entrepreneur I see myself becoming.
This last summer I earned my BS in Business Management Entrepreneurship from San Diego State University. My path to this accomplishment has been long (14 years, to be exact!) and full of both amazing and difficult experiences that have made me the driven visionary who I am today.
Along the way, I’ve started businesses – an affiliate marketing handbag website and a video production company – worked as a waitress at over 10 restaurants, sold furniture and advertising, and even managed a box office at a jazz club. All of this diverse work experience has given me a unique set of skills to apply to new business ventures. There’s also the fact that I’m a mom of a 2-year-old and 5-month-old, so I always have my antennae up for things that would make the lives of me and my mommy friends a little easier.
So what is this blog about exactly? It’s about starting out as a mompreneur who wants to help the world become a better place and sharing that experience with all of you. I’m also looking forward to creating inspiring, informative, connective events for other enterprising moms in the San Diego area.
